Alas, Art for its own sake, as Rodger would have had it. Many of his odd works, experiments and his many art projects for clients really turned into something he just enjoyed creating. There were the usual original art works that were used as special awards for sale, there were what he called, “grunt work” where he would “belly up to the bench” and put in forty straight hours hunched over using a seven-power headset, carving all fifty stars of the American Flag on a flat piece of plaster 2 1/2 inches by 3 1/2 inches in overall size. Would the art world consider that “Art?” Neil and others would guess that Rodger found pleasure in the craft and his ability to fashion shapes by hand, but all those who knew Rodger well, respected that he would always turn every project into his version of Art, and that was all that was needed to be known.
So, below, we’re showing you just a scattered sampling of things that are now eternal, we’ve kept and restored most of the originals and molds of those works that have been at one time duplicated. Art for Rodger, must have been something close to the act of carving in stone or modeling in clay, the final shape was sometimes just itself. Just for its own sake.
