Our Proud Military

Brodin Studios, as a company was really started as a support system for its primary artist, Rodger Brodin.  Rodger had joined the Marine Corps in 1958 and served eight years, assigned duty in many locations, in Okinawa for three years, on a ship outside of Cuba in 1962 during the Cuban Missle Crises and finishing his career in Vietnam at the very start of that war.  Rodger was joined by his two brothers in business, Neil and John, both Army Veterans, and, so, as a result, much of the artwork the Studios produced in those early years honored the military.  Rodger created many emotional sculptures of Veterans, a Marine Drill Instructor at Camp Pendelton, a sculpture to honor the 244 Marines killed in Beirut, Lebanon, called the “Peacekeeper,” and “Squad Ambush,” a 14-statue sculpture of a Marine squad in the terrible process of being ambushed in Vietnam.  The “Skysoldier” pays special tribute to the 173rd Airborne Brigade and his portrait of “Mr. USO,” Bob Hope, now stands inside the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis while his three-figure life-size sculpture called, “The Price of Freedom is Visible Here” guards the entrance of that wonderful hospital.  You’ll have to take a look at what was really the first tribute to returning Vietnam Vets (1982), a twelve-foot tall statue of a soldier emploring his government ”Why do you forget us?” as it stands looking at the State Capitol in St. Paul.

One early success and disappointment at the same time was Rodger’s and the Studios’ effort at honoring the work and sacrifices of Women Nurses in Vietnam in building a sculpture entitled simply, “Nurse” but following years of promotion and fund-raising, it was denied installation on the spot next to the “Wall” and the “Three Fighting Men” sculpture in D.C. where the early project women wanted it to be placed.  But, through that effort and many others, the Studios gained a good reputation and connection with all branches of Service that continues to this day in Neil’s sculptures and projects, so you know that you have come to the right place and you remain special in all that this company does.  Consider what we’ve done in the past and direct us to create new and meaningful sculpture tributes to the military as you would have it done.
